Also starring in "Top Gun: Maverick" are Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Ed Harris, and Jon Hamm.
The "Top Gun" films are all about fighter pilots flying into harm's way. The sequel "Top Gun: Maverick" suggests that those days are coming to a close due to the growing influence of drones.
Almost everyone starring in "Top Gun: Maverick" has worked together before. For example, Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly worked together in "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), and both of them worked with Val Kilmer in "Pollock" (2000).
Tom Cruise worked with Ed Harris in "The Firm" (1993).
Some people call "Top Gun: Maverick" a reboot. A reboot is when you begin a series over again. "Top Gun: Maverick" cannot be a reboot because there was only one "Top Gun" film. That would make "Top Gun: Maverick" a remake. However, it is hard to call "Top Gun: Maverick" a remake when it continues the story of the main character from the first film. So, "Top Gun: Maverick" is correctly called a sequel despite the fact that it introduces new, younger characters who may continue their own stories into new sequels.
Tom Cruise does not do a lot of sequels (if you don't count the handful of "Mission: Impossible" films). He has only done two sequels in two film franchises, the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and "Jack Reacher" (2012).
The current release date for "Top Gun: Maverick" is 26 June 2020. That is subject to change.
The director of "Top Gun: Maverick" is Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski is most famous for "Tron: Legacy" (2010) and "Oblivion" (2013), which also starred Tom Cruise. He is a talented graphic novelist and wrote and produced "Oblivion."
Paramount Pictures is releasing "Top Gun: Maverick."
"Top Gun: Maverick" takes place 34 years after the events of the original film. That is the same amount of time that has passed between the original film and its sequel in real life.
Paramount spent a long time developing a sequel to "Top Gun." The studio began preparations for the sequel in 2010.
The US Navy cooperated with the filming of "Top Gun: Maverick." Some filming took place aboard Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
Filming on USS Abraham Lincoln took place during August 2018.
F/A-18 Super Hornets appear in "Top Gun: Maverick." Boeing F/A-18E and F/A-18F Super Hornet are twin-engine, carrier-capable, multirole fighter aircraft variants based on the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. The F/A-18E single-seat and F/A-18F tandem-seat variants are larger and more advanced derivatives of the F/A-18C and D Hornet.
Val Kilmer returns from the original film in his character of Iceman.
Tom Cruise personally debuted the film's first trailer at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con on July 18, 2019. On June 19, 2019, at CineEurope in Barcelona, those present were the first to see some early footage of the film from a special Paramount presentation.
Some filming also took place on USS Theodore Roosevelt at NAS North Island and in San Diego and Oak Island, Washington.
The "Top Gun" magic is still present. Tom Cruise remains a top star. "Top Gun: Maverick" is sure to be a big hit.
