Batman is a fictional character in the DC Comics comic book. He is a superhero who has been a favorite of kids for several generations. Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939).
Batman is also known as "the Caped Crusader", "the Dark Knight", and "the World's Greatest Detective." He is usually referred to with his sidekick, Robin. Batman is a playboy millionaire, Bruce Wayne, when he is not saving the city of Gotham. Robin is Dick Grayson. Nobody knows his identity outside of his small circle of friends, including his butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Police Commissioner Gordon sends Batman a Bat-signal when he is needed to fight crime.
The villains that Batman must battle include The Joker, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, the Riddler, Two-Face, Ra's al Ghul, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. There are many other villains for Batman to fight. Batman, or The Batman as he is sometimes called, does not have any superpowers like Superman, but must rely upon the contents of his toolbelt, his batmobile, his bat-chopper, and other tools and aids. He is sometimes assisted in fighting crime by Batgirl, who in real life is Commissioner Gordon's daughter. He is a member of the Justice League and runs Wayne Enterprises in Gotham City, from which he derives his vast wealth.
