The Beatles first formed in 1957, though they weren't called "The Beatles" then and there were some different people in the band. The Beatles did not become the Beatles until 1960. Even after that, they were sometimes called other names.



All of these pictures are from the 1960s.



The Beatles broke up in 1960 but continued to make music on their own.



While John Lennon was the originator of the group and usually considered its leader, Paul McCartney gradually took up more and more of the leadership duties as Lennon pursued other interests.



It is amazing how many posed pictures there are of the Beatles. It's a wonder they had any time to sit down and play music!



As the 1960s went on, the Beatles became less concerned with how they looked.



It was a luxury in those days to dress as you felt rather than as how people expected you to look.



Paul McCartney went on to form his group "Wings" and then went on to a long solo career.



McCartney had a No. 1 album in the United States in 2018.



The other Beatles also had great success.



However, nobody had as much success individually as the Beatles did while they were still together.



The Beatles were in several popular motion pictures.



Their most famous was "A Hard Day's Night." Their most quirky was "Magical Mystery Tour."



At heart, the Beatles were very ordinary fellows from the north of England, in Liverpool.



Liverpool was the center of rock music in the early 1960s.



The Beatles began what is sometimes called the British Invasion.



This was a period when British rock groups had great success on the United States sales charts.



Usually, British acts did not enjoy great success in the United States. The Beatles changed all that. In fact, at times they were more popular in the United States than in Britain.



The Beatles lived in London for a long time. After the group broke up in 1970, they spread out to different places such as New York and Monaco.



George Harrison always lived in England.



Ringo Starr moved to Monaco in the south of France.


Paul McCartney lived in Scotland after the Beatles broke up.



John Lennon moved to New York City.



George Martin produced the Beatles and helped them make their classic records.



Other musicians such as Billy Preston also helped the Beatles now and then.



The Beatles did a lot of touring originally, but they stopped touring in 1966.



Ending their tours, though, did not hurt the Beatles' popularity. That is very unusual, as usually, musicians have to tour to maintain their popularity and sell their records.



In fact, the Beatles had some of their greatest successes only after they stopped touring.



The most successful Beatles single was "Hey Jude" in 1968.



The Beatles' final album was "Let It Be," released in 1970.



The Beatles did also release some albums and singles long after they broke up.



In the 1990s, the Beatles had three No. 1 albums containing old material.



These were "Anthology 1," Anthology 2," and "Anthology 3."



Paul McCartney had such success in the 1970s with his band Wings that many people compared Wings to the Beatles.



Ringo Starr appeared in several motion pictures in the 1970s and married a Bond girl, Barbara Bach.



John Lennon released many albums in the 1970s that had great success. His final album was "Double Fantasy."



John Lennon died in 1980 after an assassin shot him.

George Harrison also released many albums in the 1970s. He also formed a band of his own in the 1980s called the Travelling Wilburys.



George Harrison died of cancer in 2001.



Paul McCartney never stopped performing to large crowds. He has released more albums than all of the other former Beatles combined.



The Beatles legend continues to this day. Many people listen to their music every day. The Beatles will never be forgotten.
